Ambition tempered by caution

September 25th, 2008

Portugal head into the FIFA Futsal World Cup Brazil 2008 boasting a fine pedigree in the sport, though the Iberians’ track record in itself would not be enough to place them among the favourites for the coveted title. That said, all it takes is a quick word with the coaches of their potential rivals here on Brazilian soil to underline the Selecção das Quinas’ status as one of the world’s strongest futsal nations. One of the clearest exponents of the kind of technical ability that makes Portugal such feared opponents is 23-year-old wide-player Ricardo Filipe da Silva Braga, better known as Ricardinho.

“We’re going to try and repeat our performance at Guatemala 2000, when we achieved the historic feat of reaching the semi-finals,” says the player, who is set to make his FIFA Futsal World Cup bow at Brazil 2008. Having missed out on Chinese Taipei 2004 through injury, the Benfica star had to watch from afar as his team were edged out by Spain and Italy, the eventual winners and runners-up respectively, in a desperately tough second group phase . “This time around we can’t miss the opportunity to make it through the group phases. And I believe we’re well capable of doing just that.”

The Lusitanians’ confidence going into the forthcoming showpiece will have been boosted by their displays at the last edition of the UEFA Futsal Championship, which took place in November 2007. Though the Portuguese just missed out on a podium place at the competition, which was played on home soil, they took world champions Spain to penalty kicks after a 2-2 semi-final draw. And although the Spaniards then went on to add another European crown to their collection; Ricardinho feels his side have no reason to fear their near neighbours.

Beware Brazil
“To be perfectly honest, I think that only Brazil are a cut above the rest of us. The Brazilian team were unlucky against Spain in recent World Cups. I think that Portugal are now a match for Spain, but in our last games against them we lacked coolness and composure at decisive times,” explains the gifted goalscorer, before warning against the dangers of overconfidence. “Given the quality of world futsal nowadays, simply reaching the FIFA Futsal World Cup is quite a feat. Our plan is not to get too carried away before we even take the field, because that was exactly what put paid to our chances at previous World Cups.”

For that reason, coach Orlando Duarte’s charges are studiously avoiding any talk of a repeat appearance in the semi-finals, instead preferring to focus on first group-phase rivals Italy, Thailand, Paraguay and the

United States. “The Italians are always very tough opponents, Thailand are improving a lot and the USA have a very strong forward line,” says Ricardinho. “And we must also make sure we get the better of Paraguay. They’re a team who have some great players at clubs in Spain and Italy but I still think we can beat them.”

“We’ve got young players, a good team spirit and the individual quality that can make the difference. We’ve got all the right ingredients to go far, but we know we have to stay focused right from the start of every game,” concludes the fleet-of-foot Encarnado. And while Ricardinho’s note of caution may seem excessive, particularly given that Portugal appear well-placed to reach the latter stages, it serves to highlight the highly competitive and unpredictable nature of modern futsal. Tendulkar out of Irani Trophy

September 20th, 2008

Sachin Tendulkar has pulled out of the Irani Trophy to recover from his elbow injury ahead of the Test series against Australia starting October 9. He will be replaced by Tamil Nadu batsman S Badrinath.

“Tendulkar is not playing the Irani Trophy because he has been advised a week of rehabilitation,” Ratnakar Shetty, the BCCI’s chief administrative officer, told Cricinfo. “Paul Close [the National Cricket Academy's physio] has suggested he [Tendulkar] needs a break from the Irani Trophy to recover from the stiff elbow.”

Niranjan Shah, the BCCI secretary, said that Tendulkar will be available for the Test series against Australia which begins on October 9.

Tendulkar will work with Close in Mumbai from September 20 to get fit in time in order to join the national camp in Bangalore. He had twisted his elbow while fielding during the third Test in Sri Lanka last month and was forced out of the one-dayers that followed.

The Irani Trophy match will take place between Ranji Trophy champions Delhi and a Rest of India side that will feature probables for the Test series. Tendulkar had earlier declared himself fit for the match, which starts on Wednesday in Baroda.

Ronaldo set for return in Champs League

September 15th, 2008

Alex Ferguson is determined Manchester United will become the first club to defend its Champions League title, and what better time to reintroduce Cristiano Ronaldo after ankle surgery than for the start of the group stage.

It is highly likely the Portugal winger, who struck 42 goals last season, will make his highly anticipated return from July’s ankle surgery against Villarreal on Wednesday.

It should help the Red Devils obliterate memories of Saturday’s first Premier League loss at Liverpool in seven years.

“You have to recover, that’s the name of the game,” Ferguson said on Sunday. “It’s the Champions League and I think we are in a good group and I think we have a good chance of qualifying.”

Striker Giuseppe Rossi has missed Villarreal’s opening league games with a sprained left ankle and is doubtful for the return to Old Trafford.

Group E also includes the Celtic team from Ferguson’s native Glasgow and Danish side Aalborg.

“The way I look at the Champions League is to get to 10 points,” Ferguson said. “If you get that you know you have qualified and you can look forward to February when it really starts to kick-in.”

Twenty-four hours earlier, Chelsea, which was denied the European Cup on penalty kicks in May, hosts Bordeaux at the start of a long journey to the final at AS Roma’s ground. The Italians are also in Group A and meet Romanian Champions League newcomers CFR Clujnapoca.

A Champions League triumph is top of Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich’s priority list, and a second place wasn’t enough to save former manager Avram Grant’s job.

“For me, the Champions League is not more important than the Carling Cup,” said new manager Luiz Felipe Scolari, referring to England’s second-tier knockout competition. “It is important but it is not more important than a league game. We need to think game by game.

“If I say the Champions League is the most important then my players will ask why they need to bother in the other games.”

Germany midfielder Michael Ballack is set to return from a knee injury. Bordeaux has doubts over the fitness of Brazilian defender Henrique, who bruised his thigh in Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Marseille, while fullbacks Mathieu Chalme and Benoit Tremoulinas are both suspended.

Bordeaux will be looking for playmaker Yoann Gourcuff for inspiration after his acclaimed France debut over Serbia last week.

“We know that Chelsea will be favorite, but we just have to go there and give it our best,” Gourcuff said. “We should not feel inhibited in any way. We just have to keep playing our own way.”

It is a different story for Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez who is under more pressure to deliver the club’s first English league title since 1990 than repeat his 2005 Champions League triumph.

The five-time European champion begins in Marseille with lingering concerns over the fitness of star striker Fernando Torres, who stayed on the bench for Saturday’s victory over Manchester United.

“I am not reassured when I see how Liverpool played against Manchester,” Marseille coach Eric Gerets said. “That was impressive.”

The Reds took just one point from its first three group stage matches last season, but recovered to seal its progression to an eventual semifinal finish with a 4-0 victory at Marseille.

Atletico Madrid should have strikers Sergio Aguero and Diego Forlan fully recovered after the international break for tomorrow’s other Group D meeting with PSV, which is the Spaniards’ first Champions League match since 1996.

Preparing to host Sporting Lisbon tomorrow, Barcelona’s morale was hit by Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Racing Santander.

The team’s worst start to a season since 1973 has piled the pressure on inexperienced coach Pep Guardiola, who is now without midfielder Alexander Hleb for three weeks after spraining his left ankle Saturday.

Basle and Shakhtar Donetsk are the other teams in Group C.

Jose Mourinho begins his quest to repeat his 2004 triumph with FC Porto at Panathinaikos with his new Inter Milan side tomorrow in Group B, which also features Werder Bremen and Cypriot newcomer Anorthosis Famagusta.

Real Madrid coach Bernd Schuster is hopeful of steering the nine-time champion beyond the last 16 of the Champions League after its failure to so in the past four years.

In the other Group H clash, UEFA Cup winner Zenit St. Petersburg travels to Juventus, which is back in Europe after a two-year absence following the Italian match-fixing scandal.

Also Wednesday in Arsenal is at Dynamo Kiev and Porto hosts Fenerbahce in Group G, while Fiorentina visits Lyon and Steaua Bucharest meets Bayern Munich in Group F.
