The days of Champions League 2009 Twenty20 tournament extravaganza are coming to an end with one last encounter that will reveal the Champions League Twenty20 champions for 2009. While NSW Blues were a high profile team with several big names and champion cricketers, T&T came in as underdogs and stole our hearts from an amazing display of not-lost-in-one-game-even kind of cricket.

The team was looked down and cricket pundits gave the team a damn in terms of chance of seeing them in the last 8, leave last 2. Now that’s the surprise a typical Twenty20 format holds in store for cricket lovers; keeps you baffled with the unexpected happening most consistently.

The IPL teams that were fancied to lift the trophy now have no traces. Cape Cobras which had been a consistent team, could not sting the minnow team from the Caribbean. Bushrangers which was thought to have great armory surrendered meekly to the Blues. Now the Blues and the T&T will play for one last time to show their supremacy and take home whopping prize money of $2.5 millions.

The way the Trinidad & Tobago team chased 176 runs to seal a berth in finals, looked even 200 as gettable. They played with such flamboyance and ease and some of the cheeky shots that were played by Adrian Barath have been a treat to fans. He with his opening partner Perkins looked in unstoppable blazing mood that gave the T&T an amazing first wicket stand and the tempo given by the duo was amazingly continued by Simmons and Dwayne Bravo. It had been Bravo’s day. He hammered the Cobras left-right-top-bottom-and center. Poor Cobras they have had amazing run so far in the tournament and even put up a mammoth total only to remain losers.

On the other side, the NSW Blues have given a tough time for their Australia counterparts, the Victoria Bushrangers. They put up a 169 total; thanks to the great partnership between Warner and Phillip Hughes and wrapped up the Victoria for just 90 in 20 overs.

The final will be a different game for both the teams. T&T have been doing great with their batting, however, NSW Blues will test their bowling in the finals and they should contain the Blues with the best of field placements as well as attacking line and length. The opening pair of Blues are having dream run and if they can break the partnership early good for the Caribbean team. It kind of becomes difficult to predict the winner of this match from the strengths, but it appears NSW Blues have a slight edge over the T&T.

With the local team, Daredevils, and other IPL teams out of the event, there won’t be much popular support at the Ferozeshah Kotla for the two Australian teams as they fight for a place in the title clash.

What will add to the rather unwanted and uncalled for sobriety of the occasion is the somnabulent Kotla pitch which has been pouring water on the aspirations of many a batsman who had come with hopes of setting the stadium on fire. And that will the challenge for the players – how to manage a decent T20 total on the low, slow track.

A cursory glance at the figures for the three venues where CL games have been staged shows how Kotla has played spoilsport (see graphic).

It has been a pain for the batsmen and a bore for the fans. The semifinal is not going to be any different and both NSW and Victoria will find it hard to put the ball away. Of course, it becomes double difficult to play strokes if you are batting second. So, the toss will be crucial; the team batting first will have a distinct advantage.

NSW skipper Simon Katich, speaking ahead of the semis, remarked that his team had learnt a lot about the Kotla pitch over the last few days.

“Batting second is really difficult, also because of the dew factor,” he said.

NSW, who beat Victoria in the final of the Australian T20 championship, have looked the more rounded side in the ongoing competition and start favourites, something conceded by Victoria skipper Cameron White.

But these men know very well, this ‘favourites’ tag in a T20 match is just theory not to be taken seriously. Besides, let’s remember that Victoria won the ‘Big Bash’ three straight times before losing to NSW this year. They are a redoubtable T20 unit.

White’s men will have to contend with opener David Warner who has been in great form and looked murderous while cracking 40 off 16 balls in his last innings. NSW’s bowling is also impressive with Brett Lee leading it.

A drab pitch notwithstanding, it should be fascinating when this Aussie rivalry spills onto the Kotla turf.
