Superb hundreds from Daniel Vettori and Jesse Ryder dragged New Zealand from the depths of 60 for 6 to a relatively respectable 279 on a well-grassed but true pitch at Seddon Park. By stumps, India had knocked off 29 with Virender Sehwag looking in ominously good touch. India dominated the first session and the final hour, but the defiant 186-run stand, a record for the seventh wicket for New Zealand against India, could still be pivotal to the outcome of the match. The rest of the batsmen contributed next to nothing, while India’s three seamers took all but one of the wickets to fall.

Today, in scoring his third century, and the first as captain, he showed qualities that a top-order batsman would have been proud of. Soft hands were the first of them. Even when the fast bowlers induced edges, they fell short of the slips, much to the frustration of the bowler and fielders. That is where Vettori was different from the McIntoshes and the Guptills. Slowly he came to terms with the pitch, and started working his wrists around.

Vettori has the ability to shape up for a drive, and then use his wrists to direct the ball square on the off side, straight down the pitch, or into the on side. Three boundaries in three overs in the middle of the innings highlighted that ability. First, Munaf was driven wide of mid-on; in the next over he drove straight and again beat the same fielder. Then, he reached out for a drive against Harbhajan Singh, found the delivery too wide, and rolled the wrists on it, keeping the ball along the ground and beating the point fielder.

By the time Vettori had got out, he had scored a century that only vindicates his batting potential. But there was unfinished business for Ryder. A superb season so far needed a defining milestone, one that would confirm his coming of age. Ryder’s century didn’t come without drama. From 77 to 98 he moved in Iain O’Brien’s company, and scored the next four in the unreliable company of Chris Martin.

He reached the century with a short-arm pull, with a spread-out field, showing how strong those wrists and forearms are. Today, along with Vettori, they carried New Zealand and kept them in the match.

New Zealand’s bemused bowlers play a dead rubber in Auckland on Saturday that has a lot at stake for them. A win will help them restore some credibility, Daniel Vettori had said minutes after Virender Sehwag smote his side into submission in Hamilton on Wednesday.

It was the bowlers who made New Zealand change their preferred one-day international approach: chasing almost every time on winning the toss. The last 10 times they had won the toss before the Hamilton match, they opted to chase on eight occasions. They just didn’t want Virender Sehwag to make first use of flat conditions. Or Sachin Tendulkar. Or MS Dhoni, Yuvraj Singh or Gautam Gambhir. Or even Yusuf Pathan. The New Zealand bowlers need to find a way, quickly.

“I think we bowled a little bit better than we have, but it wasn’t good enough to compete against him [Sehwag],” Vettori said after the last match. “It was just poor execution, and I don’t think there is any excuse for the performance.”

New Zealand have a young bowling attack, except for Daniel Vettori and their most experienced and best pace bowler Kyle Mills. And it is the dismantling of Mills – who has gone for 202 in his 29 overs – that has caused such alarm. “I think I have probably let the side down in the last couple of games,” Mills said before the Hamilton ODI. “I haven’t started off as well as I normally did in the Australia and West Indies series. I do feel they are targeting me a little bit and the responsibility falls on me as the leader of the attack.”

India cricket god Sachin Tendulkar will miss the fourth one-day international against New Zealand in Hamilton on Wednesday because of an abdomen injury. The Indian team management will monitor Tendulkar’s fitness and he has not been ruled out of the final ODI on March 14 as yet.

Tendulkar sustained the injury when he was hit on the stomach by Iain O’Brien during the second match in Wellington. He played the third game but aggravated the injury during his innings of 163 off 133 balls; he had to retire hurt at the end of the 45th over. Scans have revealed that Tendulkar has suffered swelling and bruising.

The news is a blow to India since Tendulkar has been solid at the top of the order with scores of 20, 61 and 163 in the series. With him missing, Gautam Gambhir will open with Virender Sehwag and Rohit Sharma is likely to make a comeback.

New Zealand are almost desperate to win the toss and bat in order to avoid the pressure Sehwag puts them under right away. It is Sehwag’s unpredictability and unconventional batting that they fear most. Vettori made an interesting comparison between tackling Sehwag and Chris Gayle. “I suppose with Gayle we have got a feel of where he is going to hit and have more opportunities to block him out,” Vettori said. “With Sehwag, he has got so many quality players around him, so that gives him a sort of licence. It’s not in just one area we can block with Sehwag, we have seen him hit in a lot of areas. He is a great player, and with great players the best-laid plans can go awry.

“I suppose the guys run in and maybe second-guess what’s going to happen. We have got to tell ourselves that we have got to bowl in our area, and if we get hit from there we can live with that.”

To spice things up the third ODI will be played at the AMI Stadium with its odd shape and extremely short square boundaries. Sehwag’s fitness wasn’t a source of concern for India on the eve of the match – Mahendra Singh Dhoni played it down – and in all likelihood he will be there to impose himself on the game again. New Zealand will just have to find a way past him.
